He is best known for his work on the radio station WKYS-FM in Washington, D.C., where he hosted the morning show for over 25 years. He is also known for his work on BET's Video Soul, which he hosted from 1985 to 1996. Simpson was born on January 30, 1954 in Detroit, Michigan. He attended the University of Michigan, where he earned a degree in communications. Simpson began his career in radio in 1975, when he joined WKYS-FM in Washington, D.C. He quickly rose to prominence, and in 1985 he was chosen to host BET's Video Soul. He hosted the show until 1996, when he returned to WKYS-FM. Donnie Simpson is a Washington, D.C. radio icon, as well as a television and movie personality. He hosted The Donnie Simpson Morning Show in morning drive for over 30 years. In 1988, Simpson was recognized as both the best (Top) radio personality and Top program director in the nation by Billboard Magazine, the world's most influential music industry publication.
